Does my travel itinerary require a Passport Book or Passport Card?

In 2008 the U.S. Government started using the Passport Card to make travel easier for U.S. Citizens and an alternative to the Passport Book. You may be asking yourself, what is the difference? What do I need?

A Passport Card is great if you’re only planning to visit Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean or Bermuda by land or sea. A Passport Card cannot be used for air travel. Passport Cards are convenient, less expensive than a Passport Book and are perfect for cruisers. The current price for a Passport Card is $55.

A Passport Book is the standard and can be used for all travel outside the U.S. by land, air, or sea. Depending on your travel plans additional documentation such as a Visa may be required. A Passport Book is your best option if you plan to travel by air and/or travel internationally. The current price for a Passport Book is $135.

Both options are valid for 10 years for travelers over the age of 16 unless you change your legal name or need a replacement passport.
